## Site structure

This is a single-page application with hash-based routing:

- `/` or `#/` — The main shelf showing all adaptations as browsable tiles
- `#/c/{collection-slug}` — Filter by collection (e.g. `#/c/harry-potter`, `#/c/james-bond`)
- `#/e/{decade}` — Filter by era (e.g. `#/e/1980`, `#/e/2020`)
- `#/a/{index}/{imdb-id}` — Detail page pairing a book with its adaptation(s)

## What this site covers

Page to Screen catalogues adaptations of published books into films and TV series. Each entry links a source book (with author, publisher, publication year, and Goodreads page) to one or more screen adaptations (with production studio, release year, season count for TV, and IMDb page).

Many books have multiple adaptations. For example, Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice was adapted into the 1994 film and the 2022 AMC TV series. The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith became both the 1999 film and the 2024 Netflix series Ripley.

Not every pairing runs page to screen. The dataset also records 6 novelisations — books written from an existing film or series — and 0 works where the book and the screen version were developed at the same time. The direction of each pairing is recorded in the `origin` field.

## Data format

The raw dataset is available as `adaptations.csv` with these fields:
- book_title, author, publisher, published_year, goodreads_id, collection
- movie_title, production_studio, imdb_id, year_of_release, type (movie or tv), seasons
- origin — which side came first: blank or `book` (adapted for the screen), `screen` (the book is a novelisation), or `simultaneous` (developed in parallel)

The processed dataset is `data.js`, which adds resolved poster images (via IMDb), book cover images (via Goodreads and Open Library), and direct links to IMDb and Goodreads pages.

## How to suggest an adaptation

Users can submit new adaptations via the GitHub Issues template. The site includes an automated GitHub Actions workflow that processes submissions, appends them to the CSV, rebuilds the data, and creates a pull request.
